How to set Phantom as your default EVM wallet (or separate it from MetaMask)

  • Updated

If you’re using Phantom and MetaMask in the same browser profile, you can choose which wallet should be the default for connecting to apps. Phantom uses the same connection method as MetaMask, so it’s important to set your preferred wallet to avoid connection issues.

This guide walks you through setting Phantom as your default extension wallet, or switching it back if needed.

Set Phantom as your default extension wallet

  1. Open the Phantom browser extension.
  2. Click your profile avatar in the upper-left corner.
  3. Go to SettingsPreferencesDefault App Wallet.
  4. Choose Phantom as the default app.

This helps prevent app connection conflicts when using both wallets in the same browser.

Separate Phantom from MetaMask

If you prefer to keep Phantom and MetaMask completely separate, you can move Phantom to a different browser or a new Chrome profile. This helps prevent app connection conflicts and gives each wallet its own isolated environment.

Option 1: Move Phantom to a different browser

  1. Open the Phantom extension and go to SettingsSecurity & PrivacyShow Recovery Phrase.
  2. Back up your recovery phrase in a secure, offline location.
  3. Install the Phantom extension in a different browser (such as Microsoft Edge, Brave, or Firefox).
  4. Open the extension, click I already have a wallet, then import your recovery phrase.

Option 2: Move Phantom to a new Chrome profile

  1. Open the Phantom extension and go to SettingsSecurity & PrivacyShow Recovery Phrase.
  2. Back up your recovery phrase in a secure, offline location.
  3. Add a new Chrome profile:
    1. In Chrome, click your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
    2. Select Add Chrome Profile.
    3. Set up your new profile.
  4. Install the Phantom extension in your new profile.
  5. Open the extension, click I already have a wallet, then import your recovery phrase.

Warning: Don't share your recovery phrase or private key with anyone. If someone has access to either, they will have full control of your wallet. Phantom Support will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key.
