Recover tokens sent to unsupported chains

  • Updated

If you sent tokens to your Phantom wallet on a chain Phantom doesn't support—such as BSC, Arbitrum, Optimism, Avalanche, or Linea—your tokens aren't lost. Because these are EVM-compatible chains, you can recover them using another EVM-compatible wallet.

Requirements

You'll need a small amount of the chain’s native token to pay network fees (gas). Without gas, you won’t be able to move the tokens.

You’ll also need access to the private key for the specific account that received the tokens.

Recover your tokens

To recover your tokens, you’ll need to use an EVM-compatible wallet that supports the chain where your tokens were sent. Choose a wallet that lets you add custom networks and import a private key.

These steps use MetaMask as an example. Phantom doesn’t endorse third-party wallets. The process is similar for other EVM-compatible wallets.

Warning: Don’t share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone. If someone has access to either, they will have full control of your wallet. Phantom Support will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key.

  1. Identify the chain your tokens were sent on (for example, BSC, Arbitrum, or Avalanche).
  2. Open MetaMask. If you don’t have it, download it from metamask.io.
  3. Select the chain dropdown at the top. If the chain isn't listed, select Add a custom network and enter the correct network details for that chain.
  4. Export your Phantom private key for the account that received the tokens. See View your recovery phrase or private key in Phantom.
  5. Select your account name → Add account or hardware walletPrivate key.
  6. Paste your Phantom private key and select Import.
  7. Verify your tokens appear on the correct chain. If they don’t appear, you may need to add the token contract in MetaMask.
  8. Once your tokens appear, send them to an exchange (or another service) that supports withdrawing on a chain Phantom supports.
  9. Withdraw back to Phantom using a supported chain.

After recovery

Importing a private key into another wallet increases exposure risk. If possible, transfer your assets to a new account in Phantom after you recover your tokens.
