Exporting Your Private Key

  • Updated

DO NOT SHARE your private key with anyone, including Phantom staff. Practice caution whenever you need to use your private key to import your account, and always verify the legitimacy of the application where you plan to enter your private key! If anyone gains access to your private key, your wallet will be compromised and you will not be able to prevent them from accessing your funds.

In this section, you will learn how to view and export your private key securely. Before proceeding, you will encounter security warnings and be asked to confirm that you will not share your private key with anyone.

Your private key is stored locally on your device in a secure “vault” file. To access this file, you will need to use your password or biometrics to unlock it.

Steps to export private keys from the browser extension:

  1. Navigate to your account settings.

  2. Open the settings menu by clicking on the gear icon in the bottom left of the sidebar.

  3. In the settings menu, select Manage Accounts.

  4. Choose the account from which you wish to export your private key.

  5. Select Show Private Key.

  6. Enter your wallet password to continue.

  7. Choose the network for which you want to export your private key.

    • Note: Ethereum, Base, Polygon, and Monad use the same private key for a given account. Solana (SOL), Bitcoin, and Sui each have unique private keys.

  8. Carefully read through the Private Key safety popup, then select the checkbox to confirm you understand and agree to adhere to the safety and security guidelines.

  9. Copy your private key and securely store it in a safe location. Always prioritize safety and security when handling your private keys.

NOTE: Your private keys are only accessible by the original owner.  If they are lost there is nothing that the Phantom team can do to help you recover the wallet.
