What to do if you lost your secret recovery phrase or private key

  • Updated

If you've lost your secret recovery phrase (seed phrase) or private key, what happens next depends on whether you still have the Phantom app installed.

Warning: Phantom can’t help recover lost phrases or keys. If you don’t have access to your wallet and no backup, your funds are permanently lost.

If you still have the Phantom app

You can still recover your secret recovery phrase or private key from the app:

  1. Open Phantom.
  2. Select the wallet name or the pencil icon at the top of the wallet.
  3. Select Show Recovery Phrase or Show Private Key.

Tip: Back up your recovery phrase or key now by writing it down and storing it securely offline. Don’t save it to your device or share it with anyone.

If you no longer have the Phantom app

If you've deleted Phantom or lost access to the device and don’t have your secret recovery phrase or private key, there’s no way to recover your wallet or crypto.

Phantom doesn’t store or control your recovery credentials. This means:

  • No one can recover your wallet for you—not even the Phantom team.
  • Your funds will be permanently inaccessible.

To prevent this in the future:

  • Back up your secret recovery phrase offline.
  • Store it somewhere safe and private—never share it with anyone.
  • Treat it as the master key to your wallet.

Can you create a new recovery phrase?

No. You can’t generate a new Secret Recovery Phrase for an existing wallet.

If you need a new phrase:

  1. Create a new wallet.
  2. Manually deposit your assets from your old wallet (if you still have access).

Looking for a simpler recovery option?

Phantom offers login with Google or Apple for new wallets. This feature links your wallet to your email and PIN, so you can recover access without needing a secret recovery phrase or private key. This PIN-based recovery is available only for wallets created with social login.
