Why do I see extra accounts after importing my wallet using a recovery phrase?

  • Updated

Warning: Don't share your secret recovery phrase or private key with anyone. If someone has access to either, they will have full control of your wallet. Phantom Support will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key.

When you import a wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP), you may see more accounts than expected. That’s because your SRP can generate an unlimited number of wallet addresses, all cryptographically linked to the same phrase.

This is a feature designed to give you flexibility, convenience, and security.

Why does this happen?

  • Security and control: Your SRP gives you access to every account ever created with it. By keeping it safe, only you can access or recover these accounts.
  • Flexibility: You can import and manage multiple wallets from a single SRP. This is useful for creating burner wallets or organizing funds across platforms.
  • Convenience: Phantom remembers previously used addresses, so you don’t need to track them manually.

What to expect when importing a recovery phrase

When you enter your SRP into Phantom:

  • View Accounts: Phantom displays a list of all accounts associated with your SRP, including any you’ve used before.
  • Select accounts: Choose the specific accounts you want to import.
  • Continue: Click Continue to add the selected accounts to your wallet.
