You can create a new wallet in Phantom using a Secret Recovery Phrase, sometimes called a seed phrase. Be sure to write your recovery phrase down and store it somewhere secure and offline. Phantom doesn't keep a copy of your phrase, and you're the only one in control.

Before you start #

Here's what you'll need:

• The Phantom app: download it for free on iOS, Android, or as a browser extension at phantom.com/download.
• A private moment. You will be viewing your recovery phrase, so make sure no one can see your screen.

Mobile app #

1. Open the Phantom mobile app. 
2. On the welcome screen, tap More Options, then Create Recovery Phrase.
3. When presented with a recovery phrase, write it down and store it securely offline.
4. Tap OK, I Saved It and confirm.
5. Claim your Phantom username. Optionally, you can import it from X by connecting your X account to Phantom.
6. Tap Continue.
7. Optionally, enter a Phantom referral code.
8. Optionally, choose top traders to follow.
9. Optionally, turn on device authentication, such as Face ID or fingerprint. This unlocks Phantom on your current device only and does not replace your Google or Apple account sign-in.

Your new wallet is ready to use.

Browser extension #

1. Click the Phantom browser extension icon.
2. In a new tab that opens, click Create a New Wallet, then Create a Recovery Phrase Wallet. 
3. Create a secure password. This password unlocks Phantom only in your current browser and does not replace your recovery phrase. Your password must be at least eight characters and can contain special characters and numbers.
4. When presented with a recovery phrase, write it down and store it securely offline.
5. Click I saved my Recovery Phrase and confirm.
6. Claim your Phantom username.
7. Click Continue, then Get Started.

Your new wallet is ready to use.

FAQ #

Does Phantom use a 12-word or 24-word recovery phrase? #

Wallets created in Phantom use a 12-word recovery phrase. You can import a 24-word recovery phrase from another app as long as it follows the BIP-39 standard.

Can Phantom restore my recovery phrase if I lose it? #

No. Phantom does not store your recovery phrase. If you lose it, there is no way to restore it.

Can I change my recovery phrase? #

No. Recovery phrases are generated once when the wallet is created and cannot be changed.

How can I view my recovery phrase? #

Can I use my recovery phrase in another app? #

Yes. Recovery phrases follow an open standard, so you can export your recovery phrase from Phantom and import it into another app that supports the same standard.

Can I get a new recovery phrase for an existing wallet? #

No. Recovery phrases are generated once when the wallet is created and cannot be replaced or regenerated. If you've lost yours, the wallet cannot be restored.
