How Phantom chooses the default variant of an asset to show

  • Updated

In Phantom, assets are grouped by ticker. For example, instead of showing separate entries for every variant of USDC, Phantom shows one asset in the Tokens list. That asset uses a default variant to represent the ticker across the app.

Your holdings don’t change. If you own multiple variants of the same asset, they remain separate and are shown under Your Positions on the asset page.

To view or trade another variant, tap the chevron next to the asset ticker.

For assets where perps are available, such as TSLA, the asset selector can include both tokenized variants across different networks and perpetual contracts, letting you switch between supported asset types from the same page.

How defaults are selected

For major assets on networks we support, like BTC, ETH, and SOL, the default variant is the native version of an asset on its home network.

For assets on networks Phantom doesn't support, we default to the Solana-wrapped version where one exists.

For all other assets, Phantom chooses the default variant based on liquidity, trading activity, and execution quality. Solana variants are generally preferred because they’re easiest to trade within Phantom. However, if another supported network consistently offers a better experience, that variant may become the default instead.

With all assets, you can easily switch between supported variants by tapping the chevron next to the asset ticker.

When the default changes

Phantom only changes a default variant when it improves the experience for most users. For example, after a bridge improvement, a sustained shift in trading activity, or issues affecting price data or execution quality.

Overriding the default

The default variant is simply the version Phantom highlights across the app. You can switch to another supported variant at any time from the asset page. Your holdings remain exactly as you bought them.

If you want to buy, sell, or trade a different variant:

  1. Open the asset page.
  2. Tap the chevron next to the asset ticker.
  3. Select the variant you want.
  4. Tap Trade or Buy.

FAQ

Does changing the selected asset change my holdings?

No. Changing the selected asset only changes which variant is displayed on the asset page. Your holdings stay on their original networks.

Why do I only see one USDC (or TSLA) in my Tokens list?

Phantom groups assets by ticker and uses one default variant to represent each asset across the app. If you own multiple variants, you can view them under **Your Positions** on the asset page or switch between them using the asset selector.

Where is the Send button?

The grouped asset page doesn’t include a Send action. To send a specific variant, scroll to Your Positions, select the asset you want to send, then tap Send.

Or from Home, tap the + button in the lower right, then tap Send, and after choosing a recipient, pick the specific variant to send.
