Gasless swaps let you swap tokens on supported EVM networks without needing to hold ETH to pay network fees. If you don’t have enough ETH, Phantom pays the network fees for you for eligible swaps.
To enable gasless swaps, you’ll need to upgrade your account with smart account delegation. After the upgrade, your wallet address stays the same and you continue to control your assets while Phantom can sponsor network fees for eligible swaps.
How gasless swaps work
Every EVM network, such as Ethereum or Base, requires ETH on that network to pay network fees.
Gasless swaps work by temporarily delegating your account to a smart contract so Phantom can sponsor network fees for eligible swaps. You always maintain custody of your assets.
This delegation uses the EIP-7702 Ethereum standard.
Currently, gas sponsorship applies to eligible same-network swaps on Robinhood Chain. Other transactions still require ETH to pay network fees.
Things to consider before upgrading
While the upgrade is active, your account is delegated to Alchemy’s smart contract.
Important: Because your account delegates to a smart contract, a compromise of that contract could put the assets in your account at risk.
Alchemy’s implementation has been independently audited and is covered by a bug bounty program.
Upgrading your account is optional. If you choose not to upgrade, you can continue using Phantom normally. You’ll just need ETH on the network to pay network fees for swaps and other transactions.
As always, never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone, and never enter it on a website or app that someone sends you. Phantom Support will never ask for it.
Upgrade your account
To turn on gasless swaps, approve the account upgrade when prompted. This is an account upgrade, not an app update.
If your wallet is eligible, Phantom will prompt you to upgrade your account when you swap. Once you approve the upgrade, eligible swaps can be completed without holding enough ETH to pay network fees.
