Understand gasless transactions on EVM networks in Phantom
Gasless transactions let you swap on supported EVM networks without holding the network’s native gas token, such as ETH on Ethereum or Robinhood Chain, or USDC on Arc.
Gasless swaps are available for same-chain swaps and cross-chain swaps that start on an EVM network. You may be offered a gasless swap even if you already have enough native gas token to cover the network fee.
How gasless swaps work #
Depending on eligibility, Phantom may cover or collect the network fee in one of three ways:
- Use another token in your wallet. Phantom automatically selects a supported token to pay the fee. Most reasonably liquid, non-scam ERC-20 tokens can be used, including USDC, USDT, USDG, and WETH. Supported tokens vary by network.
- Use the token you receive from the swap. Phantom can collect the fee from the token you’re receiving, even if you don’t hold any yet. This lets you swap your full balance of the token you’re selling without keeping some for fees.
- Sponsor the fee. In some cases, Phantom pays the network fee for you, even if you have enough native gas token in your wallet.
Gasless swaps still have network fees. Phantom either pays them for you or collects them in another token.
Enable gasless transactions #
Phantom shows one of two notices, depending on how the fee is paid.
Paying with another token #
The notice tells you which token will cover the fee. For example, “The network fee comes out of your LIT balance.” No separate approval step is needed. Select Okay to proceed or Disable Gasless to opt out.
Sponsored fees #
When Phantom pays the fee, it shows a “Sponsored fees” notice. Proceeding still upgrades your account through smart account delegation.
Select Okay to proceed or Disable Gasless to opt out.
About smart account delegation #
Gasless swaps use smart account delegation. Upgrading your account delegates it to Alchemy’s smart contract, enabling sponsored fees and fee payments in other tokens.
Alchemy's implementation has been independently audited and is covered by a bug bounty program. A compromise of the smart contract could put your assets at risk.
Before upgrading, keep the following in mind:
- Your wallet address stays the same, and you continue to control your assets.
- Upgrading is optional and only affects swaps. It does not make sends gasless.
- Delegation stays active until you remove it.
- Delegation uses the EIP-7702 Ethereum standard.
To remove delegation, go to Settings > Security & Privacy > Remove account delegation. Your swaps will then return to the standard network fee model.
Current limitations #
Gasless sends are currently not supported.
