Understand token P&L in Phantom
Profit and loss (P&L) shows how your token trades have performed after fees. It accounts for what you paid, what you received from sales, and the current value of the tokens you still hold.
P&L is available for tokens on supported networks in the Phantom mobile app and browser extension. Phantom calculates P&L separately for each account and automatically adds historical P&L when you set up a new wallet.
P&L is not intended for tax purposes.
View your P&L #
Open a token in your portfolio to see its P&L. The metrics you see depend on the token and whether you’re using the mobile app or browser extension.
To review an individual trade or transfer, open it from History on mobile or Activity in the extension. You can check the amounts, transaction status, and a link to the network’s blockchain explorer.
Understand the metrics #
| Metric | Description |
|---|---|
| Amount Invested / Cost Basis | The cost assigned to the tokens you currently hold. Purchases, sales, and transfers affect this amount. |
| Avg. Entry | The average price you paid per token across your purchases. |
| Today's Return / 24h Change | The token’s price change over the past 24 hours. This doesn’t measure your return since you bought it. |
| Realized | Your profit or loss on tokens you’ve sold. |
| Unrealized | Your profit or loss on tokens you still hold, based on the current market price. Available in the browser extension. |
| Total | Your realized and unrealized returns combined. Available in the browser extension. |
How P&L is calculated #
Phantom includes fees in P&L calculations so your returns reflect transaction costs.
When you buy more #
Phantom uses weighted average cost: each purchase updates your average entry based on how many tokens you bought and what you paid.
For example, before fees, buying 1 SOL at $100 and another 1 SOL at $200 gives you the following:
- Tokens held: 2 SOL
- Amount Invested: $300
- Avg. Entry: $150 per SOL
When you sell some tokens #
Phantom uses your average entry price to calculate the profit or loss on the tokens you sell. That profit or loss becomes your realized return.
Your amount invested decreases by the cost assigned to the tokens you sold. The profit or loss on the tokens you keep remains unrealized and changes with the market price.
When the price changes #
Market price changes affect your position’s value and unrealized return.
Today’s Return covers only the past 24 hours. It can be negative while you’re up overall, or positive while you’re down overall. For example, a token can rise today but still be worth less than you paid for it.
When you send or receive tokens #
Phantom records sends and receives at the market price at the time of the transfer.
If you receive tokens from an exchange or another wallet, their P&L starts at zero when they arrive in Phantom. Their market value on arrival becomes the starting point for tracking your return, rather than the price you originally paid elsewhere.
