Understand your token P&L in Phantom
Profit and loss (P&L) helps you understand how your token trades have performed after fees. It accounts for what you paid, what you sold for, and what your remaining tokens are worth.
You can view P&L for tokens on Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon, and Robinhood in the Phantom mobile app and browser extension. P&L is calculated separately for each account. When you set up a new wallet, historical P&L is added automatically.
P&L is not intended for tax purposes.

Understand your metrics #
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Position Value | What the tokens you currently hold are worth in USD. |
| Balance | How many tokens you currently hold. |
| Cost Basis | The cost of the tokens you currently hold. See how purchases and transfers affect this below. |
| Today's Return / 24h Change | How the token's price has moved over the past 24 hours. This doesn't measure your return since you bought it. |
| Realized | Your profit or loss on tokens you've sold. |
| Unrealized Return / Unrealized | Your profit or loss on tokens you still hold, based on the current market price. Available in the browser extension. |
| Total / Total Return | Your realized and unrealized returns combined. Available in the browser extension. |
How P&L is calculated #
P&L calculations include fees, so your returns reflect transaction costs.
When you sell part of your holdings #
Selling tokens turns their profit or loss into a Realized return. If you sell only some of your tokens, only that portion becomes realized. The profit or loss on the tokens you keep remains Unrealized and changes with the market price.
Why your return can be negative when the price is up #
Today's Return on mobile and 24h Change in the browser extension reflect price movement over the past 24 hours. They don't account for the price you paid.
Total Return combines your realized and unrealized returns. If you bought at a higher price, your total return can still be negative even when the token's price is up today.
How purchases affect your cost basis #
Phantom uses weighted average cost to calculate your cost basis. Each purchase contributes to an average price based on how many tokens you bought and what you paid.
For example, before fees, buying 1 SOL at $100 and another 1 SOL at $200 gives you 2 SOL with a total cost basis of $300. Your average cost is $150 per SOL. When you sell, Phantom uses that average cost to calculate your realized return. The cost basis of your remaining holdings decreases by the cost assigned to the tokens you sold.
How transfers affect your P&L #
Sends and receives are recorded at the market price at the time of the transfer. If you receive tokens from an exchange or another wallet, their P&L starts at zero when they arrive in Phantom. Their value at that time becomes the starting point for tracking your return, rather than the price you originally paid elsewhere.
