View your recovery phrase or private keys in Phantom

  • Updated

If you need to back up or export your wallet credentials, you can view your Secret Recovery Phrase (12 words) or private keys in Phantom. These credentials are stored locally on your device in an encrypted vault.

Your recovery phrase and private keys give full access to your wallet or account, so only reveal them when necessary and store them in a secure, offline location.

Warning: Don't share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone. If someone has access to either, they will have full control of your wallet. Phantom Support will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key.

How private keys work across supported chains:

  • Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Monad, and HyperEVM share the same private key for each account.
  • Solana, Bitcoin, and Sui use unique private keys for each account.

If you created your wallet with a Google or Apple account and a four-digit PIN, your wallet also has a Secret Recovery Phrase. Consider exporting it as an additional backup method.

If you imported any private keys into Phantom, those private keys are not connected to your main wallet’s recovery phrase.

Common issues

I don't see the "Show Recovery Phrase" or "Show Private Key" options

If you don’t see the Show Recovery Phrase or Show Private Key options in Phantom, you may be using a hardware wallet such as Ledger or Saga. Hardware wallets never reveal the recovery phrase or private key to apps, including Phantom. This is expected behavior.

If Show Recovery Phrase is missing but Show Private Key appears, your account was imported using a private key. In that case, the account does not have a recovery phrase associated with it. Use Show Private Key instead.

The recovery phrase field is blank for an account created in Phantom Terminal

If the recovery phrase field appears blank for an account created in Phantom Terminal (trade.phantom.com), the original Secret Recovery Phrase that was in your wallet when the trading account was created may no longer be present. Import that original recovery phrase to make the trading account’s recovery phrase visible again.
