Gas sponsorship lets you swap tokens on supported EVM networks without always needing ETH to pay network fees. Depending on the swap, Phantom may sponsor the network fee or let you pay it with a supported ERC-20 token.
To use gas sponsorship, you will need to upgrade your account with smart account delegation. After the upgrade, your wallet address stays the same and you continue to control your assets.
How gas sponsorship works
Every EVM network, such as Base, Ethereum, or Polygon, requires a native token to pay network fees.
Gas sponsorship works by temporarily delegating your account to a smart contract so Phantom can sponsor network fees for eligible swaps. You always maintain custody of your assets.
This delegation uses the EIP-7702 Ethereum standard.
Gas sponsorship is available for eligible swaps on supported EVM networks. Availability depends on the network and swap route.
Things to consider before upgrading
While the upgrade is active, your account is delegated to Alchemy’s smart contract.
Important: Because your account delegates to a smart contract, a compromise of that contract could put the assets in your account at risk.
Alchemy’s implementation has been independently audited and is covered by a bug bounty program.
Upgrading your account is optional. If you choose not to upgrade, you can continue using Phantom normally. You’ll just need ETH on the network to pay network fees for swaps and other transactions.
As always, never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone, and never enter it on a website or app that someone sends you. Phantom Support will never ask for it.
Upgrade your account
To turn on gasless swaps, approve the account upgrade when prompted. This is an account upgrade, not an app update.
If your wallet is eligible, Phantom will prompt you to upgrade your account when you swap. Once you approve the upgrade, eligible swaps can use gas sponsorship.
Remove account delegation
You can remove smart account delegation at any time.
Go to Settings → Security & Privacy → Remove account delegation.
After removing the delegation, eligible swaps return to the standard network fee model.
Pay network fees with supported ERC-20 tokens
For some eligible swaps, you can pay network fees with a supported ERC-20 token instead of the network’s native token.
Supported tokens vary by network and may include stablecoins and wrapped native assets. If this option isn’t available, you’ll need the network’s native token to pay the fee.
