Understanding gasless EVM transactions in Phantom

  • Updated

Transactions on EVM networks, such as Ethereum, Robinhood Chain, or Base, require a small amount of ETH to pay network fees.

For some eligible swaps, Phantom may be able to complete the transaction without requiring you to hold enough ETH. Depending on the swap, Phantom either sponsors the network fee or lets you pay it with a supported ERC-20 token.

To use gasless transactions, you'll need to upgrade your account with smart account delegation. After the upgrade, your wallet address stays the same and you continue to control your assets.

How gasless EVM transactions work

Every EVM network, such as Ethereum, Robinhood Chain, or Polygon, requires ETH to pay network fees.

Gasless transactions work by temporarily delegating your account to a smart contract. This allows Phantom to sponsor network fees or accept supported ERC-20 tokens for eligible swaps. You always maintain custody of your assets.

This delegation uses the EIP-7702 Ethereum standard.

Gasless transactions are currently available for eligible swaps on supported EVM networks. Availability depends on the network and swap route.

Things to consider before upgrading

While the upgrade is active, your account is delegated to Alchemy's smart contract.

Important: Because your account delegates to a smart contract, a compromise of that contract could put the assets in your account at risk.

Alchemy's implementation has been independently audited and is covered by a bug bounty program.

Upgrading your account is optional. If you choose not to upgrade, you can continue using Phantom normally. You'll need enough ETH, or another supported payment token when available, to pay network fees.

As always, never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private keys with anyone, and never enter it on a website or app that someone sends you. Phantom Support will never ask for it.

Enable gasless transactions

To enable gasless transactions, approve the account upgrade when prompted. This is an account upgrade, not an app update.

If your wallet is eligible, Phantom prompts you to upgrade your account before your first eligible swap. Once you approve the upgrade, eligible swaps can use gas sponsorship.

Remove account delegation

You can remove smart account delegation at any time.

After removing the delegation, eligible transactions return to the standard network fee model.

Pay network fees with supported ERC-20 tokens

For some eligible swaps, you can pay network fees with a supported ERC-20 token instead of the network's native token.

Supported tokens vary by network and may include stablecoins and WETH. If this option isn't available, you'll need the network's native token to pay the fee.
