About mainnet, testnet, and devnet networks in Phantom

  • Updated

Phantom supports different blockchain networks. Most people will only ever use mainnet, but Phantom also lets you switch to testnet or devnet for trying things out safely.

Mainnet (the “real” network)

Mainnet is the live blockchain network.

  • Assets on mainnet are real.
  • Transactions on mainnet are permanent.
  • Mainnet is what you use for normal trading, collecting, and sending crypto.

If you’re using Phantom day-to-day, you’re almost always on mainnet.

Testnet and devnet (for testing)

Testnet and devnet are testing environments. They’re used to try apps, features, and transactions without risking real funds.

Testnet/devnet funds aren’t real

Any tokens you see on testnet or devnet:

  • Aren’t real
  • Have no value
  • Can’t be converted to mainnet assets
  • Can’t be transferred to mainnet

These networks exist so developers and curious users can safely experiment before anything goes live.

What’s the difference between testnet and devnet?

  • Testnet is often used to test changes that are closer to what will run on mainnet.
  • Devnet is more flexible and commonly used for day-to-day development and app testing.

You don’t need to memorize the difference—if you’re testing something and it requires a specific network, the app or instructions will tell you which one to use.

Turn testnets on or off in Phantom

You can enable or disable test networks anytime.

  1. Select your profile avatar (upper-left).
  2. Go to SettingsDeveloper Settings.
  3. Turn on Testnet Mode.
  4. Choose a network.

When Testnet Mode is enabled, you’ll see a banner at the top that says: “You are currently in Testnet Mode.”

Turn test networks off

To return to mainnet, go back to SettingsDeveloper Settings, and set Testnet Mode to off.
