Troubleshoot wallet import issues

Use this guide if accounts are missing after signing in or importing a wallet, or if Phantom won’t accept your recovery phrase or private key.

Accounts are missing after signing in or importing a wallet #

Missing accounts may still be recoverable. Your wallet may have imported successfully without adding every account automatically.

After signing in with Google or Apple #

Phantom automatically restores only the first account in your wallet. You’ll need to add any other accounts with onchain activity manually.

  1. Follow the instructions to create a new account in Add wallets and accounts to your Phantom wallet.
  2. Repeat until all expected accounts appear.
After importing a recovery phrase #

Phantom restores accounts with onchain activity, such as sends, receives, or swaps, from oldest to newest. Accounts with no balance or transaction history may not appear automatically.

  1. Follow the instructions to create a new account in Add wallets and accounts to your Phantom wallet.
  2. Repeat until all expected accounts appear.
  3. If accounts are still missing, follow Reset your Phantom app, then import your wallet again.

If accounts are still missing after a reset, you may be using a different recovery phrase, or the wallet may use a derivation path Phantom doesn’t support.

Wallet is empty after signing in with Google or Apple #

Check that you signed in with the same provider you used to create your wallet.

Google and Apple sign-ins create separate wallets, even when they use the same email address. For example, if you created your wallet with Google, signing in with Apple won’t restore it.

Sign in with Google if you originally used Google, or Apple if you originally used Apple.

Recovery phrase not working #

When importing your Secret Recovery Phrase, you may see one of these messages:

  • “Invalid secret recovery phrase”
  • “Phrase needs to be at least 12 words”
  • “Word 1 is incorrect or misspelled”
  • “Incorrect format”

These messages usually indicate a problem with the words or formatting. Check that your phrase:

  • Contains exactly 12 or 24 words.
  • Has every word in the correct order.
  • Uses the correct spelling. Check individual words against the BIP-39 English word list.
  • Has one space between words in the mobile app, or one word in each cell in the browser extension.
The words are correct, but the import still fails #

If you’ve checked the spelling, order, and spacing, return to the app where you created the wallet.

  • If you still have access, export the recovery phrase again and compare it with your saved copy.
  • If available, try importing the wallet’s private key instead.

Wallet apps can use different derivation paths, which are the rules used to generate accounts from a recovery phrase. If Phantom doesn’t support the original wallet’s path, you may need to continue using the original app to access those accounts.

Another app rejects your recovery phrase #

Some trading platforms and tools, such as Axiom or Padre, require a private key rather than a recovery phrase. If your Phantom recovery phrase is rejected on one of these platforms, this is usually why.

Only export a private key if you trust the platform and understand why it needs direct account access.

  1. To export your private key from Phantom, follow the instructions in View your recovery phrase or private keys in Phantom.
  2. Once exported, paste the private key into the third-party platform.

Private key isn’t working #

Check that you selected the correct network when importing the private key. Selecting the wrong network can cause an “Incorrect format” error.

Accounts you don’t recognize appear after import #

If unfamiliar accounts appear, you may have entered a different recovery phrase, or the original app may generate accounts in a way Phantom doesn’t support.

Recovery phrases must match exactly. A different valid phrase opens a different wallet.

To check the phrase, follow these steps:

  1. Import it into the app where you originally created the wallet.
  2. Check whether your expected accounts appear.

If the accounts appear in the original app but not in Phantom, you may need to continue using that app to access them.

If they don’t appear in the original app either, check that you’re using the recovery phrase for the intended wallet.

My wallet became watch-only #

If your wallet appears as watch-only after Phantom was restored from a backup, your sign-in session may have expired.

Before resetting Phantom, make sure you can access the Apple or Google account, recovery phrase, or private key you originally used. You’ll also need the recovery phrases or private keys for any additional wallets you imported.

  1. Go to Settings > Security & Privacy > Reset App. If you can’t access this option, uninstall Phantom and download it again.
  2. 1. Open Phantom and restore your wallets using the same Apple or Google account, recovery phrases, or private keys.

Resetting Phantom clears the app’s local data. It doesn’t delete your wallets or funds.
