View your recovery phrase or private keys in Phantom

  • Updated

Your Secret Recovery Phrase and private keys are your backup credentials. Export them so you can restore your wallet on a new device, after a reset, or if you ever lose access. Even if your wallet was created with a Google or Apple account, it still has a recovery phrase.

If you imported private keys into Phantom, export those too.

Warning: Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone. Anyone with access to either has full control of your wallet. Phantom Support will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key.

Recovery phrases and private keys are different. Learn more here: Difference between a Secret Recovery Phrase and a private key.

Common issues

Show Recovery Phrase is not available

This can happen for a few reasons:

  • Hardware wallet. If you're using a hardware wallet such as Ledger or Saga, Phantom never exposes the recovery phrase or private keys. This is expected behavior.
  • Account imported with a private key. If Show Recovery Phrase is missing but Show Private Key appears, the account was imported using a private key and doesn't have a recovery phrase associated with it. Use Show Private Key instead.
  • Watch-only wallet. If your wallet is in watch-only mode, credential options may not appear or may load indefinitely. See Show Recovery Phrase keeps loading forever for steps to restore access.

Show Recovery Phrase keeps loading forever

This can happen if your wallet is in watch-only mode. To restore access, take these steps:

  1. Reset Phantom by going to SettingsSecurity & PrivacyReset App. If you can't access that menu, remove Phantom and download it again.
  2. Sign back in the same way you originally created your wallet:
    • If you used a Google or Apple account, sign in with the same account and your four-digit PIN.
    • If you used a Secret Recovery Phrase, enter the same 12- or 24-word recovery phrase.

Phantom does not store your credentials, and we can't help you recover them.

Tip: A wallet created with a Google or Apple account also has a Secret Recovery Phrase. Export it as an additional backup. If you ever lose access to your Google or Apple account, you can restore your wallet by importing its recovery phrase.

Show Private Key is not available

This can happen to wallets that were created with a Google or Apple account but have been migrated to KMS. Use Show Recovery Phrase instead.
