Get started with the Phantom browser extension

  • Updated

Phantom is a browser extension that lets you access your wallet directly in your browser.

Important: Only get Phantom from phantom.com/download. Fake extensions can appear in browser stores and may steal your funds.

Supported browsers

We recommend installing Phantom on Google Chrome.

The extension will work in other Chromium-based (Brave, Opera, Microsoft Edge), but it is not officially supported.

See Supported platforms and browsers for details.

Install Phantom

  1. Go to phantom.com/download.
  2. Click the Chrome icon to download.
  3. Click the Add button in the browser's store to actually install the Phantom extension.

Once installed, the Phantom icon appears in the toolbar in the browser, usually in the upper right.

Open Phantom

Click the Phantom icon in your toolbar. If you don't see it, click the puzzle piece icon and select Phantom from the list.

Welcome screen

When you open Phantom after installing it for the first time, you'll see this welcome screen:

If you're new, click Create a new wallet and follow instructions to get set up. See Create a new Phantom wallet for details.

If you've used Phantom before and want to restore your existing wallet, click I Already Have a Wallet and restore using your recovery method—a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase or a Google/Apple account and a four-digit PIN. See Import or restore a wallet in Phantom for details.

Home tab

If you're already created or imported a wallet, then clicking the Phantom icon opens the Home tab of your wallet, where you see your balance.

To access settings, click your profile avatar in the upper left.

To switch the extension to a side panel mode, click the expand icon in the upper right. See Use side panel mode in the Phantom browser extension for details.

Pin Phantom to your toolbar

After installing, pin Phantom so it's always visible. Click the extensions menu (puzzle piece icon) in your browser toolbar, find Phantom, and pin it.

Keep Phantom up to date

Phantom updates automatically, and usually you don't need to take any to update it. But you can initiate a manual update too. See Update the Phantom browser extension.

Common issues

The Download button isn't working

On phantom.com/download, clicking Download opens a list of browsers—it doesn't start a file download. Click the browser icon to continue.

I installed Phantom but don't see the icon

Click the puzzle piece icon (extensions menu) and pin Phantom to your toolbar.

I installed Phantom but can't find my wallet

After installing, your wallet isn't on a webpage or tab. It opens from the Phantom icon in your browser toolbar. Click the icon to open Phantom. If you don't see the icon, click the puzzle piece icon in your toolbar, find Phantom, and pin it.

I closed Phantom and can't find it

Click the Phantom icon in your toolbar to reopen it. Phantom doesn't run in the background—you open and close it like any browser extension.

Phantom disappeared after I clicked something

If you were using side panel mode and clicked the exit icon (two arrows), Phantom closed—it didn't minimize. Click the Phantom icon in your toolbar to reopen it.

Phantom shows a black screen or won't load

Update your browser to the latest version. If the issue persists, switch to Chrome.

Phantom extension won't open

If clicking the Phantom icon does nothing and no error appears, try the following:

  1. Update your browser to the latest version.
  2. Disable other browser extensions temporarily to check for conflicts.
  3. Clear your browser's cache and cookies. See your browser's help documentation:
  4. Remove and reinstall the Phantom extension from phantom.com/download.

I can't log in to the Phantom extension

Consider resetting the extension password. Be sure to have a backup of your wallet: the recovery phrase or the Apple/Google account and the four-digit PIN.
