What to do if you lost or forgot your private key

  • Updated

This article explains what a private key is and what to do if you’ve lost access to it.

A private key controls a single account (address) on a specific chain, such as Solana. If someone has access to your private key, they have full control of that account.

If you're logged out of Phantom

If you're logged out of Phantom on all your devices and don’t have a backup of the private key, the account can’t be recovered.

Phantom doesn’t store private keys. There’s no way to retrieve one after access is lost.

If you're still logged in to Phantom

Warning: Don't share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone. If someone has access to either, they will have full control of your wallet. Phantom Support will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key.

Export your private key while you still have access:

  1. Go to SettingsManage Accounts.
  2. Select the account (browser extension) or tap the pencil icon next to the account (mobile app).
  3. Select Show Private Key.
  4. Follow the prompts and copy the private key.
  5. Store it in a secure, offline location.

After exporting, confirm that your private key is written down correctly and stored somewhere only you can access.

Private key vs recovery phrase

A private key controls a single account. A recovery phrase controls the entire wallet and all accounts derived from it.

If you believe your recovery phrase—not your private key—has been lost or compromised, see What to do if you lost or forgot your recovery phrase.
