How to move assets when you need to start over with a new wallet

  • Updated

This article explains how to move any remaining assets if you need to start over with a new wallet. This is necessary when your old wallet was compromised but still contains assets you want to keep.

Use the section that matches how you access your wallet:

Before you begin

Before you begin, make sure the following are true:

  • You can still access your current wallet on at least one device. If you can’t access the wallet, you won’t be able to transfer assets out of it.
  • You have enough gas on each network you want to transfer assets from. For specific amounts, see Recommended amounts of native tokens by network.
  • If your old wallet uses Apple or Google account (seedless wallet), you can

Step 1: Check what assets are still in your old wallet

Before you delete your old wallet or start over, review your old wallet for any remaining assets, including the following:

  • Token balances
  • NFTs
  • Staked assets
  • DeFi positions
  • Perp and prediction positions

Step 2: Create a temporary wallet with a recovery phrase

You may need a temporary wallet created with a recovery phrase to hold your assets while you start over.

Creating the temporary wallet is easiest on another device or in the Phantom browser extension using a supported browser. Safari isn’t supported for the Phantom browser extension.

For example, you can install Phantom on a second phone, or install it in Chrome, Brave, or Firefox on your computer.

Once Phantom is installed, open it and follow these steps:

  1. Select Create a new wallet.
  2. Select Create a seed phrase wallet.
  3. Follow the prompts.
  4. Back up the recovery phrase securely.

Step 3: Transfer assets to the temporary wallet

Send your assets from your old seedless wallet to the temporary wallet.

You can transfer assets by following these steps:

  1. In your temporary wallet, select Receive.
  2. Select a network, then copy the wallet address.
  3. In your old wallet, select Send.
  4. Paste the address you copied.
  5. Select the same network.
  6. Repeat for any other assets and networks you want to transfer.

Step 4: Delete your old seedless wallet

After confirming your old wallet is empty, delete it by following these steps:

  1. Go to SettingsSecurity & PrivacyDelete Wallet.
  2. Follow the prompts.

Step 5: Create a new seedless wallet

After you delete your old wallet, create a new seedless wallet using the same Apple or Google account:

  1. Select Create a new wallet.
  2. Select Continue with Email, then select Apple or Google.
  3. Follow the prompts.

Step 6: Update the addresses linked to your username

If you previously claimed a Phantom username, you may still see the same username after you create your new seedless wallet.  Since your wallet addresses change when you start over, update the addresses linked to your username so that sends to your username go to the right wallet.

To update the linked address, see How to update the addresses linked to your Phantom username.

Step 7: Transfer assets to your new wallet

Send your assets from the temporary wallet to your new seedless wallet.

You can transfer assets by following these steps:

  1. In your new wallet, select Receive.
  2. Select a network, then copy the wallet address.
  3. In your temporary wallet, select Send.
  4. Paste the address you copied.
  5. Select the same network.
  6. Repeat for any other assets and networks you want to transfer.

Step 8: Remove the temporary wallet

After you confirm everything has transferred successfully, you can remove the temporary wallet. Because it was created using a recovery phrase, you can uninstall Phantom or reset the app on the device where you created the temporary wallet by going to SettingsSecurity & PrivacyReset App.
