Move funds to a new wallet when you need to start over

  • Updated

Tip: Phantom has a new look on mobile. For an overview of changes, see What's new in Phantom.

If your wallet was compromised but you can still access it, the safest move is to transfer your funds to a brand-new wallet and stop using the old one. This guide walks you through doing that, step by step.

Warning: Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key with anyone. Anyone with access to either has full control of your wallet. Phantom Support will never ask for your recovery phrase or private key.

The steps depend on how your current wallet was created:

Before you start

  • Check for staked tokens, DeFi positions, perpetual or prediction market positions, and Cash account balances. Some of these need extra steps (unstaking, closing positions, withdrawing) before funds can be moved.
  • Withdraw your Cash account balance to a Solana address you control before you start. Your Cash account is tied to your current Phantom profile and can't be moved. You'll set up a new one after this process.
  • Make sure you can still access your current wallet on at least one device. If you can't, you won't be able to move funds out of it.
  • Make sure you have enough native token, such as SOL on Solana or ETH on Ethereum, to cover network fees. See About network fees.

Wallets created with a Google or Apple account

Step 1: Check what's still in your current wallet

Before you delete your current wallet, review everything still connected to it:

  • Token balances
  • Collectibles
  • Cash account balance
  • Staked tokens
  • DeFi positions
  • Perpetual and prediction market positions

Some assets or positions need extra steps before you can move funds. You may need to unstake tokens, withdraw from a DeFi app, or close open positions first.

Step 2: Create a temporary wallet with a recovery phrase

Create a temporary wallet to hold your funds while you start over with your Google or Apple account wallet. This is easiest on another device or in the Phantom browser extension using a supported browser. Safari isn't supported for the Phantom browser extension.

Once Phantom is installed:

  1. Select Create a New Wallet.
  2. Select Create a Recovery Phrase Wallet.
  3. Follow the prompts.
  4. Back up the recovery phrase securely.

Important: Store the new recovery phrase in a secure, offline location before you transfer any funds.

Step 3: Transfer assets to the temporary wallet

Send your assets from your current wallet to the temporary wallet.

  1. In your temporary wallet, get your receive address: on the browser extension, click Receive on the Home tab. On mobile, tap the + button, then tap Receive.
  2. Select a network, then copy the wallet address.
  3. In your current wallet, start a send: on the browser extension, click Send on the Home tab. On mobile, tap the + button, then tap Send.
  4. Paste the address you copied.
  5. Select the same network.
  6. Repeat for any other assets and networks you want to transfer.

Before you continue, confirm that the assets arrived in the temporary wallet.

Step 4: Delete your current wallet

After you confirm your current wallet is empty, delete it in SettingsSecurity & PrivacyDelete Wallet.

If Delete Wallet isn't available due to an active Cash account, contact Phantom Support.

Step 5: Create a new wallet

After deleting your current wallet, create a new one using your Google or Apple account:

  1. Select Create a New Wallet.
  2. Select Continue with Email, then select Apple or Google.
  3. Follow the prompts.

If your Google or Apple email wasn't unlinked from your previous wallet, use a different Google or Apple account to create your new wallet.

Step 6: Verify your identity for Cash (US only)

Your new wallet has a new Cash account. If you verified your identity for offchain features before, that verification doesn't carry over.

Complete identity verification using a different email address than the one used for your previous Cash account.

Step 7: Update the addresses linked to your username

If you previously claimed a Phantom username, update the addresses linked to it so sends to your username go to the correct wallet. See Manage your username in Phantom.

Step 8: Transfer funds to your new wallet

Send your assets from the temporary wallet to your new wallet.

  1. In your new wallet, get your receive address: on the browser extension, click Receive on the Home tab. On mobile, tap the + button, then tap Receive.
  2. Select a network, then copy the wallet address.
  3. In your temporary wallet, start a send: on the browser extension, click Send on the Home tab. On mobile, tap the + button, then tap Send.
  4. Paste the address you copied.
  5. Select the same network.
  6. Repeat for any other assets and networks you want to transfer.

Confirm that everything arrived in your new wallet before you remove the temporary wallet.

Step 9: Remove the temporary wallet

After you confirm everything transferred successfully, remove the temporary wallet by going to SettingsSecurity & PrivacyReset App on the device where you created it.
